New Details in Police Shooting

February 7, 2012

Some details have been released about a man and woman who were shot late Friday night by police in Camarillo after allegedly hitting a sheriff’s deputy with car.

The deputy, 44, shot a 46 year-old male and a 49 year-old female after a short vehicle pursuit.

According to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, the deputy attempted to perform a traffic stop on a vehicle near Yolanda and Rowland in Camarillo. The vehicle did not immediately yield, but did eventually stop at the 400 block of Kino Street.

As the deputy approached the car, police claim the driver put his vehicle in reverse, struck the deputy, and pinned his leg beneath the vehicle’s tire.

The deputy, fearing for his safety and further injury, fired his duty weapon at the driver, according to police.

Both the driver and a female passenger were wounded by the gunfire. The man and woman, and the deputy, were taken to a local hospital. The woman’s leg was grazed by a bullet. Both she and the deputy were released from the hospital on Friday.

Police would not confirm whether the driver of the sedan remained hospitalized.

No names of the parties involved have been released, although the deputy was described as a 15-year member of the department and a SWAT officer.

The shooting is the second officer-involved incident in 2012. Last week, a sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a machete-wielding man in Moorpark.
